    Summary:

Soil and water are the two basic source of a nation. The future of a
crop production depends to a large extent on the conservation of soil
and water through proper use and treatment of soil. Soil degradation,
defined as lowering and losing of soil functions, is becoming more and
more serious worldwide in recent decades, and poses a threat to
agricultural production and terrestrial ecosystem. It is estimated that
nearly 2 billion ha of soil resources in the world have been degraded,
namely approximately 22% of the total cropland, pasture, forest, and
woodland. As a result of soil degradation, it is estimated that about
11.9 –13.4% of the global agricultural supply has been lost in the past
five decades. Hence, it is desirable to examine the changes caused by
different degradation processes that result in decline of soil productivity
or soil quality. Therefore, it is essential to combat soil degradation at
different levels and scales world and country wide, not only for food
security and ecological health, but also for the guarantee of global
sustainable development. Several issues recently were discussed
during DISHA-2021 AT Dhanabd, Jharkhand. The idea to bring out the
entire edited chapters in the form a book was long felt and stressed
upon by the eminent speakers and contributors. The speakers also felt
that , the manuscript in new and extended compilation must address
the core issue of organizing DISHA-2021 and all the chapters must
speak of topics which were deliberated on innovations / breakthroughs
in diverse and widespread topics in agriculture and allied sectors for
empowering small and marginal farmers of the country.
