    Summary:

Before the advent of modern methods in Genetics and Breeding, breeders
used the method of mass selection, which was not a sufficient method as it is
subjected to non-genetic variability present in the field. Selection is the
process by which a few individuals having certain characteristics are chosen
at the expense of others to become the parents for the next generation. Infact
both under natural and artificial selection, the populations harbouring genetic
variability are constantly shifted for superior types. Specialised techniques
required to control pollination artificially when making either a self fertilized
ear or a cross pollinated ear in Maize crop. Many a time, statistical
applications, such as, compact family block designs in progeny row selection,
estimation of heritability and genetic gain, genotype × environment
interaction, seed orchard designs, measurement of biodiversity, progeny
testing, Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) of breeding values of
parents from progeny tests, path coefficient analysis, diallele and line ×
tester analyses, mapping Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL), are extensively used
in breeding improvement programmes.During the last quarter of this century,
there has seen a tremendous development in agriculture, which began with the
introduction of high yielding and high input responsive varieties of major crops.
The present deliberation has been an attempt to highlight the changing roles
of plant breeder in a crop improvement programme, which hitherto does not
conclude just with the evolution and release of new high yielding variety. The
book is a beginner’s guide of basic and conventional breeding
methodologies. These general methods of making pollinations have been
suggested. The book introduces the different methods of selection,
emasculation, field layouts techniques, DUS selection criteria, importance
and hybrid rice seed production techniques which require a trained mind and
hand.We thank all the authors / publishers from which references were
collected on various aspects Hence, the readers anything find odd, it may be
brought to the knowledge of authors for rectification and refinement.
We owe our gratitude to Dr. Brajendra , Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIRR,
Hyderabad for framing up this book. Gratitude is also placed on records for
several sources from where facts, figures and tables(especially, DRR
HYBRID RICE MANUAL,TNAU Reading materials related to breeding of field
crops were taken, cited ,consulted and drafted in this manuscript. Efforts have
been taken to proof read the book before printing. Help rendered by Suresh
Nadella in timely printing is duly acknowledged. Authors acknowledge one
and all who helped in bringing out this edition.
